Dog Training Collar & Aids: Tools for Effective Dog Obedience Training

9 Cute Obedience Dogs

Before you start to train your dog, It's important that you make sure you've the right tools for the job. Using the correct dog training aids, especially dog training collar will enable your dog to pay attention and listen to what you have to say during obedience training. A dog training collar can help a lot to help obedience train your dog more effectively.

Below is a list of dog training aids to help in efficient and effective dog obedience training. We will look at the different dog training collar first before moving on to other dog training aids widely available in the market.

Dog Training Collar - Buckle CollarDog Training Collar - Buckle Collar

The buckle collar also known as a Tag collar fits around your dog’s neck and holds your dog identification tags. This dog training collar can also be used to connect the leash to your dog so that you could restrain and control him. This is a simple dog training collar that offers the least control over the dog.

Most people start to use such dog training collar only when their dogs are well-trained and response to commands. When you are starting to obedience train your dog, you should use a dog training collar that offers you more control over your dog.

Dog Training Collar - Slips Chain CollarDog Training Collar - Slips Chain Collar

The Slips chain collar also known as Choke collar works with a snap and release motion principle. This dog training collar will tighten around the dog’s neck when you tug the leash.

This dog training collar can be useful when used properly. When (If) using it, you must always use it together with verbal commands, and should not tug the dog training collar too hard or hold it tightly as your dog will get choke! Lastly, you must also not leave the collar on your dog when he is alone or not supervised.

This dog training collar is consider to be an inhumane dog training equipment by many dog trainers around the world. One also need a considerable amount of dog training experience to use it properly.

Personally, I would not recommended using this dog training collar, especially if you are a new dog owner. Try to stay away, unless you know what you're dealing with or have guidance from any professional dog trainer.

Dog Training Collar - Gentle LeaderDog Training Collar - Gentle Leader

Gentle Leader also known as Halti Lead doesn’t choke the dog, instead it allows the owner to guide and lead the dog by its head. As shown in the picture on the left, this dog training collar is useful for shy dogs and dogs with aggression problems. The gentle leader collar is also extremely good for children to handle their dogs.

The gentle leader is one useful dog training collar and will help a great deal in training any type of dogs. I highly recommended dog owners to use this dog training collar.

Electrontic Dog Training Collar - Prong CollarDog Training Collar - Prong Collar

Prong collar also known as Pinch or Self-correcting collar is an electronic dog training collar. Put around the dog's neck, it will gives the dog a pinching correction at your discretion.

Sound like a torture device huh? Don't worry it's not. A good Pinch collar actually allow you to set or adjust the level of pinching effect on your dog - depending on its size and breed.

Pinch collars can be a very effective and useful dog training collar especially for dogs that simply refuse the gentle leader or dogs that can’t stop choking themselves when they put on the choke collar.

This is certainly for the big dogs, or maybe "bad" dogs! If your dog is trainable with a gentle leader, you shouldn't bother to use prong collar. I recommend that you seek help from a dog trainer if you got a hard nut to crack. I would not recommended this collar as I always believe in positive dog training. Stay away unless you know what you're doing or have guidance from any professional dog trainer.

Dog Training Collar LeashLeash

Putting a dog training collar on your dog alone won’t help you in training. A leash must be attached to the collar to help you be in control of your dog. ;-)

Dog training CrateCrate

A Crate is basically a big cage made of metal, plastic or wood. Available in many sizes, the crate should be big enough for your dog to stand up and turn around easily.

When used properly, crates encourage good sleeping habit, discourage mischief and help to house train your dog. It can also be a safe confinement for your dog when he’s not supervised at home or when you are driving. A crate is so useful, every owner should have one!

Dog Training TreatsTreats

Treats are snack food that your dog likes and is used during obedience training as a lure to get your dog’s attention or to encourage your dog to response to your command.

Treats should ideally be small in size and low in salt so that your dog can eat them quickly and still maintain his healthy figure. Recommended to help you during training!
